STAR Capital (“STAR“), a leading European fund manager, announces today that it has acquired a majority stake in Globalways AG (“Globalways”), a Stuttgart based IT services and infrastructure business. The investment is the second made by the STAR III Fund, following the acquisition of Synergy Health Management Services Ltd in July 2016.
STAR, in partnership with the founders and management team of Globalways, will commit c. €60 million of growth capital to build a regional data centre business in Germany. The continued growth in internet usage is driving an increasing need for data storage, distribution and access requirements while demanding the latest standards in IT security. This is happening at the same time that existing data centre facilities situated in many economic centres across Germany are ageing and often at capacity. The transaction announced today will target those regionally important cities, providing modern, highly secure and energy-efficient facilities, conveniently located for customers. An innovative modular-build approach will allow facilities to be designed and delivered much more quickly than traditional large data centres.
The new data centres to be established throughout Germany will be operating under the brand “Datacenter One”.
Peer Knauer, entrepreneur and senior adviser to STAR, has agreed to join the Board as Chairman and invest alongside STAR and management.
Markus Binder, founder of Globalways, said:
“This exciting transaction enables us to establish a distributed infrastructure, pursuing our long-term vision of delivering exceptional hosting and IT services to nationwide business customers. This can now be achieved through unifying standardised data centre and fibre network platforms, and leveraging significant economies of scale. Together with my co-founder Johannes Pichler, and fellow board member Wolfgang Kaufmann, we are looking forward to this next step in the development of Globalways, alongside our fantastic employees and a distinguished team of advisors and board members, including Peer Knauer, Dr. Juergen Mattfeldt and Uwe Nickl, who all bring extensive experience in this sector.”
Wolfgang Kaufmann, Member of the Board of Management of Globalways, said:
“After joining Globalways earlier this year, this transaction is the logical next step in establishing Datacenter One as the pioneering brand for next generation modular, highly secure and energy-efficient data centres throughout Germany.”
